Is Discord Nitro Worth It?

Discord Nitro is the premium monthly subscription addon to Discord, the free voice & text chat app that gamers have adopted. We’ve moved past Teamspeak and Ventrilo and live in a Discord world. No longer does someone have to pay for a TS or Vent server, with Discord being free everyone can have their own server and talk to their friends, guild mates, etc. Discord does charge for its premium service, Nitro, which comes in at $9.99 USD a month or $99.99 a year (2 free months) or classic which is $4.99 USD a month or $49.99 a year (2 months free).

What You Get

You get the following benefits (read over these and if it sounds good then you’ve answered the question yourself, if you’re still curious scroll down and read our thoughts):

Classic Nitro & Nitro Tier

  • Custom Discord Tags: You can change the “Discrim” or the four digits after your tag if it’s available. When you cancel your subscription, it randomizes.
  • Animated Gifs / Emojis: You can have animated avatars and emojis.
  • Higher Quality Screenshare: You can share your game at 720p 60fps or 1080p 30fps. Which is nice.
  • Custom Emojis Everywhere: You can use emojis from other channels anywhere.
  • Increased Upload Limit: You can upload 50mb files instead of just 8mb.
  • Profile Badge: A Discord Nitro badge.

Nitro Tier

  • Server Boosting: You can give one channel a boost and change your boost every 7 days. This help article explains in details how server boosting works, but basically if two people boost then the server gets 50 more emoji slots, an audio upgrade, a custom invite background and an animated server icon. With 10 boosts, you get 50 more emojis, even better audio, a server banner and everyone can upload 50mb on that server. Finally with 50 boosts, you get 100 more emojis, even better audio, 100mb upload for the server and a vanity URL.
  • Nitro Game Perks: Various games, like Warframe right now and a few others, give you in-game items for being a Nitro member.
  • Nitro Games: Basically it’s like a Netflix, but for Games. You get unlimited play across a variety of titles while subscribed. There are some super cool games like Project Highrise, Xcom, Bioshock 1&2, Star Wars Republic Commando, Psychonauts, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Battle Chef Brigade and more.

Is it worth it?

Here’s a pretty good decision chart. I say don’t worry about the free games, most of them are available in humble bundles or cheap on sales – it’s just a nice addon. Something to do when you have nothing better to do. If you play Warframe right now, it’s good for at least a month subscription because the Warframe bonuses are very strong ($50+ bundles given away). Server boosting is nice, but you’d need to be part of a guild or community that really needed it.

If you’re on Discord all day and it’s your primary means of talking to your friends, then it might be worth it. There are lots of times I’ve wanted to use another chats emotions or send a larger file. Those quality of life improvements are nice.

If you’re on the fence about classic vs. the new nitro, consider if you’ll play any of the games or use any of the perks. Otherwise, you get the vast majority of the features with classic that matter on a quality of life scale.

If you rarely use Discord, then I mean obviously there is nothing here for you.

I hope this helps you with your purchasing decisions!
