When we consider the power of gaming one of the things we don’t consider often is its ability to be extremely inclusive and allow for a wide swath of people from the full spectrum of socioeconomic statuses to enter into a video gaming career. Make ‘NCAA Football’ Great Again

Since the Super Bowl earlier this month, we have gone nearly one month without football (I’m not counting the AAF). I don’t care much for basketball, but I’ll catch a college game every now and then. Now is the time of the year when I anxiously await for the baseball season to start up, but the best time of the year is when the baseball season is well underway and college football starts back up again. But if NCAA Football was still around, we could have college football in the palms of our hands every day of the year. I recently wrote an artcile about my referee concept game, so here are my takes for revitalizing the NCAA Football franchise. ‘Apex Legends’ First Thoughts

I just downloaded Apex Legends yesterday, and if I had only one thing to say about it so far, it would have to be I have no idea what I’m doing. The concept is interesting, with squads of three with each character having their own “Legend” character with a particular class/skill. This game could be extremely popular, but I don’t know if it will take over Fortnite like they hope. Although there is a tutorial upon starting the game, I found myself struggling during actual gameplay. The tutorial just runs you through the basics, and there’s no way of finding out what each individual Legend is capable of. I have no earthly idea what their unique abilities and skills are aside from the general description of what they do (although it looks like their website tells you). ‘Super Mario World’ Still Holds Up

One of my favorite early memories in life was playing on my grandpa’s Super Nintendo as a kid. Sure, there was a pool, a swing-set, and a huge backyard to do pretty much anything, but I was always drawn to the Nintendo. I looked forward to loading up my save files and continuing my journey from last time on the road trip. Super Mario World was one of my favorites. It was such a beautiful world, a side-scrolling game that was simple enough yet challenging at the same time. This game was great back then, and it still holds up today. The first thing about this game is how amazing it looked for the time. The colors all pop and the graphics on this game are so much better than its Super Mario Bros. 3 predecessor on the original NES. The Super Bowl is one of the most televised events in the world. This year, fans across the globe tuned in to see if the New England Patriots would continue their dynasty or if they would crumble at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams. I imagine that most fans were rooting for the Rams, since the Patriots have seen way too much success, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. This year’s Madden Super Bowl simulation that predicted the Rams would top the Pats was wrong, just as I knew would be the case. In one of the most boring Super Bowl games I have ever witnessed, I couldn’t help but think – would a game of Madden be more entertaining than this? This year’s Super Bowl was all about defense. Sometimes, it’s the simple things that mean the most to us. The same can be said for video games. Some of the best, most addicting games can be such a basic concept, like Flappy Bird or Candy Crush. One of my better gaming memories is retro. It is the Mattel Classic Football handheld electronic game. The game is quite simple. You are on offense and there are three controls. You can either move up or down and move forward. That’s it. You move all the while the defenders are creeping towards you. You must weave your way in and out of the defense until you either get a touchdown or fail to after four downs. If you are a sports fan of any kind, I’m sure you have heard the news. With time dwindling at the end of the fourth quarter, Drew Brees threw a pass on third down to his wide receiver on the sideline. The receiver is sprinting to get into position to catch the pass when all of a sudden, BOOM! He gets nailed by the defensive back, unable to catch the pass. It is obvious pass interference. The Saints will get a new first down, can kill some clock, and kick a game-winning fieldgoal to send them to the Super Bowl. However, the referee never threw a flag. The game would eventually go to overtime with the Los Angeles Rams coming out on top. Tough break for the Saints. A fan ended up recreating the play in Madden, which is pretty creative if you ask me.
