2019 is both a big year for RPGs and a slow one. Tons of really anticipated RPGs and long, storied franchises are either finally coming back or dipping their toe into new territory, but oddly enough the majority of these big releases happened early on in the year. Everyone has that one underrated game from their childhood that always brings back those nostalgic memories of simpler and more innocent times. The problem is that most of the time you realize that you only thought those games were great was because you were seeing them through rose-colored glasses and if you actually went back and played them you would realize how they weren’t underrated but just honestly not that good. Darkest Dungeon, the turn-based dungeon crawler of 2016, is officially getting a sequel. Now Red Hook Studios, the development team responsible for the hit game, has come forward with a new trailer to officially announce the upcoming release. Darkest Dungeon hit stores back in 2016, having been released for PC respectively. Following the game’s meteoric success, Darkest Dungeon has been released for a plethora of platforms. From PlayStation 4 to the Nintendo Switch, Darkest Dungeon can now be found on most consoles and other gaming platforms. The game was a great success. There was once a time when you had to truly defeat a video game. Rather it was Super Mario Brothers or Doom, these games offered such insurmountable challenges that it was as if the bits of software were maliciously sentient. Crowdfunding has become somewhat controversial as of late. Obsidian Entertainment has done it again. The company recently announced The Outer Worlds and garnered a hardcore following for their isometric RPG Pillars of Eternity has made another stellar gaming experience. This time, however, the company has managed to make it even better after launch. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is an isometric RPG dungeon crawler that was released for PC just last year and later released on consoles. The game was funded within just one day following the announcement of a crowdfunding campaign on Fig. Perhaps needless to say, Obsidian Entertainment put the money to good use. Throughout the history of gaming, there have been a select few technological turning points that changed the direction of video games forever. You could say they include: the introduction of arcades, the arrival of home consoles (and subsequently, the death of arcades), and the leap from 2D to 3D graphics. These advances changed the landscape of games and decided the next playing field that they would exist on. After 3D graphics, though, what is leap is left?
